LED Lighting Renovation of the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium
The legendary Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium — widely known as Le Chaudron — has undergone a major lighting transformation. As part of Saint‑Étienne Métropole’s commitment to energy renovation, the Zumtobel Group supported all stakeholders to deliver a tailor‑made, high‑performance LED lighting solution that respects and enhances the iconic architecture of the home of the Greens.
This renovation stands out for several reasons:
- A major lighting upgrade for one of France’s most recognisable stadiums
- Use of custom‑made Altis luminaires, manufactured locally at the Zumtobel factory in Les Andelys, France
- The largest LED‑lit stadium ever completed by the Zumtobel Group in France
- A complete bespoke lighting concept designed specifically for the venue
- Full alignment with Saint‑Étienne Métropole’s energy efficiency goals
Custom Lighting Solutions for an Iconic Venue
To meet the stadium’s technical and aesthetic requirements, bespoke Altis luminaires were designed and manufactured:
- Custom Altis with black PCB and a special RAL finish for seamless architectural integration
- 252 Altis luminaires dedicated to pitch lighting
- 60 Altis RGBW luminaires featuring a custom deep blue to elevate the visual presence of the stands
- All fixtures equipped with louvers and glare-control systems to ensure optimal spectator comfort
- Full DMX control, synchronised with sound and video for an immersive match‑day experience
The lighting design, supply, and implementation was carried out by Cobalt Lighting Design using an approach rarely seen in France.
Instead of traditional cluster installations, each luminaire was mounted with a precise and consistent spacing of 120 cm, emphasising meticulous design and visual coherence.
